2017 OBAFEMI AWOLOWO MEMORIAL PRESS STATEMENT

As most of you are probably aware, this year's memorial event should have been the third edition of the ?baf?mi Awol?w? Prize for Leadership.

However, the Prize is not being awarded this year, not because the nominees were not eminently accomplished individuals in their various fields of endeavour, but because the award is based on demonstrable evidence of substantial achievement, across the board , of the criteria laid out by the Selection Committee.

For this reason, therefore, the Committee advised that the Foundation hosts a lecture, to be delivered by a seasoned academic and mentee of Chief ?baf?mi Awol?w?, the purpose of which is not only to refresh our memory about his outstanding legacy in the sphere of leadership, but also, and particularly, to fire the imagination of Nigerian youths about the immense possibilities for their individual and collective progress and development if they would understand and strive to restore the leadership model of the likes of Chief Awol?w?.

The lecture, titled, ‘The Awol?w? Legacy and its Message for Nigerian Youths' , will be delivered by Professor Banji Akintoye, an eminent scholar, author, and leading African historian. He was a senior professor and Director of the Institute of African Studies at the ?baf?mi Awol?w? University, Ile-If?.

From his early years as a prominent student activist in university, he was eventually elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1979-83). Today, he is one of the very few surviving men and women who worked closely with Chief Awol?w?.

The lecture will hold at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs on Monday, March 6, 2017, starting at 11am and will be chaired by no less a personage than General Yakubu Gowon, GCFR, former Head of State and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ?baf?mi Awol?w? Foundation. The general public is cordially invited.

As has been the case for the past few years, the Foundation will also host the ?baf?mi Awol?w? Memorial Under-10 Boys' Cup and the recently re-named HID Awol?w? Memorial Under-17 Girls' Cup.

The organisers, the National Youth Soccer Association, will give you more details about the competition shortly. Suffice it to say here that the final matches will be played at Aj?l? Stadium, Lagos, on Friday, March 10, 2017. Kick-off will be at 3pm.

Finally, the Selection Committee will, according to the rules of the ?baf?mi Awol?w? Prize for Leadership, call for fresh nominations, between July 1 and September 30, 2017. We look forward to an award ceremony in 2018!

On behalf of the ?baf?mi Awol?w? Foundation, I wish to thank the Nigerian public, immensely, for turning out in huge numbers every year, in response to our invitation, to celebrate this great icon. As you do so, you help to keep the flame of selfless leadership, good governance and, above all, hope alive.

We look forward to welcoming you all again this year.

I thank you for your attention.
