AWOLOWO PRIZE FOR LEADERSHIP

OBAFEMI AWOLOWO FOUNDATION
PRESS STATEMENT ON THE 2016 OBAFEMI AWOLOWO PRIZE FOR LEADERSHIP

The Selection Committee of the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership had series of meetings to consider nominations received in respect of the Prize for 2016. The final meeting was held on Thursday, 15 December, 2016.

The Committee received many quality nominations and wishes to note that the nominees are distinguished persons who have made significant contributions in their own rights. It is important to reiterate that the criteria for selecting an awardee for the Prize include integrity, credibility, discipline, visionary leadership, people-centred leadership, grassroots friendly policies, positive policy intervention, impact on poverty reduction/increased welfare, respect for rule of law, honesty, courage, selflessness and accountability as epitomized by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. A recipient of the award is expected to substantially embody these criteria.

After a thorough and detailed consideration, we regret that we are unable to award the Prize this year.

In consonance with the regulations governing the award, therefore, the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation will advertise for nominations in June 2017. It is our hope that a suitable nominee will emerge next year.

Signed,

Chief Emeka Anyaoku

Chairman, Selection Committee
