AWOLOWO 30th ANNIVERSARY

ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE,
HIS EXCELLENCY, SENATOR IBIKUNLE AMOSUN CON, FCA ,
AT THE POST-HUMOUS BIRTHDAY LECTURE OF CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO, HELD ON MONDAY, 6 TH MARCH, 2017

Protocols,
On behalf of the Government and the entire 7.2 Million good people Ogun State, the proud kith and kin of the Sage, I commend the organizers and all those who have contributed to the successful hosting of this programme. No doubt, the sage's annual post humous birthday lecture continues to be a veritable platform through which we will all cross-fertilize ideas and come up with more practicable and improved recommendations towards continued socio- economic developments of our society, and further improving on the lives of our people. These are the ideals which the Sage lived for and there could not have been a better memorial for his contributions to the development of humanity.

2. Let me also say that the choice of today's lecture, ‘'The Awolowo Legacy and its Message to Nigerian Youths'' is another apt choice that demonstrates the Sage's passion. As a Statesman, his foresight was beyond generations yet unborn. We will continue to talk of his firsts, such as the First Television Station in Africa, the Western Nigeria Television which metamorphosed into the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA); the Liberty Stadium; Ikeja Industrial Estate; the Oodua Conglomerates; his legacies in the area of Education, especially the Free Education Programme remains indelible. It is the same ideal that led to the establishment of the then University of Ife, now aptly named Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile –Ife. That University was renowned to be one of the most beautiful University Campuses in Africa.

3. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I want to assure you all that, as a Government of the Home-State of the Sage, we will continue to contribute our quota for the sustenance of this event. But more importantly, we will ensure that, his spirit lives on in all that we do, through our policies and programmes. Our 5 - Cardinal Programme as entrenched in our Mission to Rebuild Ogun State is to ensure that Ogun State retains its enviable position in the comity of States, not just by producing eminent sons and daughters who continue to make their marks in the historical development of Nigeria, but also that the State remains a viable socio-economic entity. Just like the sage, our belief is that a well-educated and healthy people provided with an ambience for personal growth will not only be easy to govern but also be able to contribute to the socio-economic development of the Society. That was the motif of Papa and, that same motif drives our Administrations policies and programmes in Ogun State.

4. Papa made the South-Western region the most educated region in Nigeria. Today, Ogun State is the education capital of Nigeria with 2 State-owned Universities; 5 State- owned Polytechnics and Monothechnics; one State-owned College of Education; one Federal University, one Federal Polytechnic, One Federal College of Education and about ten private owned Universities.

5. In addition to this, various Ogun Standard social infrastructure that dot the nooks and crannies of our dear State. This has brought about not just improved aesthetics of the State, but we are also experiencing an influx of people and investment in the State. Today, Ogun State is the fastest growing economy and industrial capital of Nigeria, with over 110 new industries in the last five and half years that have individually invested between a minimum of $200Million and in excess of $2Billion. Or how else will one identifies the home State of Obafemi Awolow! Obafemi Awolowo's Spirit lives on.

6. As I end this address, let me once again commend the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation for keeping Papa's memory and ideals alive. This is further demonstrated by the presence a wide array of Awoists and progressives gathered here in honour of Papa (MENTION NAMES OF THOSE THAT CAN BE IDENTIFIED) .May his gentle soul continue to live in peace, while his legacies and footprints live on.

7. I thank you all for listening and God bless.
