WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,

I am delighted to welcome you to this symposium, which is being organised by Dideolu Specialist Hospital, Ikenne, and sponsored by Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, in commemoration of the 30 th anniversary of the transition of Papa Obafemi Awolowo.

By way of brief introduction, Dideolu Specialist Hospital is the vision of the Chief Obafemi Awolowo, to bring world-class healthcare to Nigeria. After his transition, Mama, Yeye Oodua H. I. D. Awolowo, assumed the role of promoter and Chairman of the Hospital Board until her transition in 2015.

I thank all of today's key participants for honouring our invitation. Your presence here is an eloquent testimony to the importance that you place on the issue of rural healthcare in Nigeria.

According to the World Rural Population Map, the percentage of rural dwellers has declined in Nigeria from 77.3% in 1970 to 50.4% in 2011. Nevertheless, rural dwellers still constitute a significant percentage of the country's total population and their access to quality healthcare should be a matter of concern to all stakeholders.

It is my hope that this meeting will come up, in its communique, with important policy options towards improving the experience of rural folk as far as healthcare in Nigeria is concerned. I also hope that, in the course of our discussion, two issues will receive significant mention.

One is geriatrics , in view of the preponderance of the elderly in rural populations, and the other is occupational health , in view of the health risks related to the possible use of toxic chemicals, not only in the many manufacturing plants dotted around rural areas, but also on farms.

I thank all policy makers, healthcare professionals, community leaders and, indeed, all our guests here present. I look forward, as I am sure you all do, to a very exciting and fruitful session.

I thank you for your attention.
